How do you throw a brick through the window… features new commissions and recent artworks by Yani aviles, Chloe P. Crawford, Nat Decker, Jeff Kasper, Carly Mandel, Jeffrey Meris, and Libby Paloma.
Each artist engages with the radical question posed in the text “Sick Woman Theory” by Korean American writer, artist, and musician Johanna Hedva: “How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can’t get out of bed?” In this statement, Hedva considers the rights and opportunities of disabled individuals who navigate forms of protest.
Through sculpture, new media, installation, and film, the artists explore and challenge how disability, sickness, and neurodivergence are experienced today. Their works offer everyday acts of care and resistance, creative methods to navigate harmful medical systems, world softening, and radical joy—all of which activate Hedva’s reckoning of protest and public space.
This group exhibition is co-organized by Tufts University Art Galleries (TUAG) and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC). It emerged from a long-term research project begun in 2023, including a 2024 symposium, and artist-led workshops in 2025.
